Let me preface this post by saying: I did not watch any pre-game shows, any post-game shows, any news analysis, or listen to any post-game radio commentary concerning the Super Bowl before I wrote this.
I didn't even read the article I linked to in the title.
This is just off the cuff commentary by someone who happened to watch the game.
First off....I'm not a big football fan. It's the Bears, they're my hometown team, I'm glad they went as far as they did.....but honestly, I've only watched the last 4 Bear games (all the way through) this year.....
Yes......I'm every superfan's biggest nightmare.....a bandwagon rider.
My Mrs and kids were much more excited than me. They were screaming at the TV for every "Doh!" the Bears did. I was disappointed, but not angrily so, because as is typical with sports at the ux house, I have to pause the game between plays to explain the rules and flags/fouls as they occur. This makes for a much more objective observation of the game. It also makes it pretty funny when the announcers talk about how this or that rule or that rule has changed from years back about 3 minutes after I've just explained the same to the family...but I digress.
The Bears lost....because of missed opportunities by Rex Grossman. I don't fully blame Rex though because half of the missed opportunities were do to directives from Smith.
The first big mess ups were the dropped snaps, they couldn't have come at a worse time. For a young quarterback who has displayed waffling emotions in most of the games since they won the division, I can't imagine a bigger ego blow.
The other mess ups (three biggies that I saw) were Rex's inability (unwillingness?) to run the ball. Unless some rule I'm unaware of has been recently passed in the NFL that quarterbacks can't run the ball was added to the rulebook....
There were multiple occasions where Rex could have clearly run the ball much further than whoever he passed it to (or in one case threw for an interception). It's the Super Bowl MAN!, take a couple hits for the team eh? The holes Rex missed were so big, I can only assume that Smith had standing orders for Rex to never cross the line of scrimmage (or it's that magic rule I don't know about).
The Colts offense controlled the ball magnificently, and their defense played consistently for the entire game, and that's why they won. Manning (like him or not) deserves a Super Bowl, Rex does not.
