*Sigh* Just to start with... none of the over sized eyes have any feeling whatsoever.
Next; George Lucas tries to resurrect the wacky/crazy/funny Yoda from "The Empire Strikes Back" (though it doesn't come across with those dead eyes)....
These are just some of the hallmarks of the latest attempt to make likable the stars of Episodes I,II, & III ....which is not cutting it (IMO) in the new "The Clone Wars" CGI series on Cartoon Network.
This follows the CGI release from this summer, which even though it targeted the kiddies, was probably as good or better (character-wise) than any of the III digitally recorded "real" films. At least you could like some of them by the time it was over. While the TV show is made in the same style (and with the same software), it is not done to the level of the theatrical release both in background detail and especially around the eyes. In the CGI movie, the eyes had a 3-D look which gave some depth to the over sized eyes (anime' style). But in the series from the front most of the eyes look flat... or as Quint said in "Jaws": "Like a dolls eyes". None of them have any depth until they look away and you see them from the side. They actually did a better job in the traditionally animated "Clone Wars" from 2003. While the digital versions get their look and feel from the 2003 mini-series, the human-rendered version was much more engaging too look at, and compensated for the mediocre voice work than the current computer-rendered version does.
Which brings me to the title of this post. In the 2003 animated version, the "drawn" Yoda looked so cool that I could forgive the less-than-Frank Oz performance of voice actor Tom Cane... but the current CGI-fest with it's dolls eyes and lackluster voicing makes Yoda seem more like a dyslexic little gremlin instead of a powerful Jedi Master. He's doing some things and making decisions that seem very un-Yoda-like in the first few episodes. Even with episodes I, II, & III, I never even thought of poking fun at the Yoda character whatsoever....but this latest (useless and fruitless) "labor of love" from George Lucas has succeeded in finally burning me out on the franchise.
I'm thinking that he would have been better off filling in the gaps from Episodes IV, V, & VI....but then he'd have to pay royalties to the original cast (I be he regrets cutting those royalty % deals now).
Lost he is....hmm...heh...he hee HEE hee he heee (Yoda cackle).
