Tried to see Pirates 2 this weekend (big mistake), ended up seeing Pixar's Cars instead, we weren't disappointed. The Mrs. felt it was a tad predictable for a Pixar Flick, but still enjoyed it fully.
Of the Disney/Pixar flicks, I'd have to say, this one was more for the buffs than the kids....and by that; I don't mean the CGI buffs, I mean the car buffs. There is much for the gearheads in this movie. Also for fans of Route 66. Everything from Paul Newman as a Hudson (a car that was suprisingly fast for it size, mainly due to a lower center of gravity than other cars of it's time) to multiple salutes of the kitsch motels that used to (and still do) dot the sides of Route 66. One of my Co-workers who owns a 37 Chevy saw the movie as well last weekend, ironically just before he was going to take a Route 66 journey himself. He said he almost fell out of his seat a couple times.
Some of the car based puns/jokes are verrrry funny.
A wide shot of Ornament valley (instead of monument valley), really takes some looking into... to catch all the automotive details. Even the "cap" of Radiator springs will not be familiar to most folks under the age of 30. A few folks have told me they REALLY don't like the character of 'Mater played by Larry the Cable guy...as it turns out, none of them even saw it. They just were annoyed by his presence in the trailers and commercials. I'm not a big Larry fan, but I did end up enjoying his character. Though it is a shame, as the role was originally written for Jim Varney. While I think Larry did a decent job, Jim would have been perfect.
Owen Wilson was a tad whiny at first, but I think he had to be for the first half of the movie.
Michael Keaton is completely unrecognizable as Chick Hicks, which I think is a good thing for this movie. He pulled out every annoying vocal stop he could, and it made the role better.
Make sure to stay for the credits, unlike the Incredibles, there's entertaining stuff right to the end of them.
