DVI connection...a love/hate relationship...

So...I've got a DVI connector on two computers, three monitors, and one TV.
None of them play the same way...

My TV: Sony specifically says "Do not connect a computer to the DVI interface", this is only for HD enabled devices...and I found out why. Because it won't display your computer screen correctly no matter how you play with it. It's either 640 x 480 or 1280 x 1024. Neither is the least bit useful for what I wanted it for...which was to save my component/SVHS connectors for my other (older) stuff. The lower res is no good for video, and the hi-res goes over the edge of the widescreen with tiny, tiny fonts. The card I was using specifically said it was compatible with HD TV screens. No amount of tweaking could get a display I was happy with, so I passed on the attempt. My fault for getting a HD projection set instead of a DLP.

I had recently built #1 daughter a new computer with a 64meg DVI/VGA card (but with the same 15" LCD screen). The DVI worked...pretty good (much better font smoothing than the previous VGA card)...that was until we went to install "The Sims" (which worked find on her old box). Even though the card and screen passed every dxdiag test...The game still said the graphics card could not properly display the program and it would not install. That was until we shutdown, changed the DVI cable to a VGA cable and rebooted...then everything worked just fine.

I also recently picked up a 128meg DVI card for my main box, the installation was smooth, and I can clearly see an improvement in performance and display quality over the old card....but not before I was thwarted once again by a DVI connector. I had used the VGA connector on my NEC 19" LCD since first getting it. When I went to grab the DVI cable that came with it (which I admit, I never looked at). I found it was DVI to VGA ("vga on computer to DVI on monitor only" the cable said)!
Now, I realize when I got the monitor, there were not that many DVI cards out there...but now I had to get a DVI to DVI cable...luckily since I had to take the one off #1's computer, I had one to use.

Three DVI stories... none of which worked as it should have. Why bother with a new standard if everyone doesn't abide by it?
